Home Improvement

When I was younger, one of my favorite parts about going on a vacation was staying in the hotel rooms. While I obviously was excited about seeing sights other than my Houston neighborhood, there was always something about pretending that this new, perfectly clean, and well organized room was actually mine. To this day, one of the things that I still am fond of in hotels is their white sheets and upholstery fabrics. Sitting on a white couch or climbing into a bed with crisp white sheets makes you extra cautious to not do anything to change the perfect white appearance. Now that sixty degree weather has been somewhat of a regular here in Syracuse for the past few days, it got me thinking about spaces that always provide a sense of freshness like the season of spring does. For me, that feeling is always associated with white hotel linens and plenty of beautiful and natural light like in the image above.

What kind of interiors do you associate with spring?

When I was in elementary school, my parents built my sister and myself a bubblegum pink playhouse in our backyard. For me, this playhouse was a space of my own that I loved to be in and was special because of all of the work put into it from the two-way stable style door, the little porch, and the little steps that I would hop over in the grass to get to. However, my favorite part was the chalkboard wall. Of course, being younger, I thought it was amazing that I could draw all over these walls whatever I wanted, and that it could easily be changed, as well. Years later, we no longer have the playhouse, but my love for these chalkboard walls still remain. I love the way that they can add a sense of character and playfulness to an otherwise ordinary space, and the fact that they can be so personal to each owner. Whether you write your grocery lists on them in the kitchen, display inspirational quotes in intricate lettering, or put up in a family room for free drawing, they create a homey quality that definitely reminds me of a great and special place.

Festive Fruit Pizza

{Strawberry + Blueberry Fruit Pizza}

In reminiscing this past weekend about childhood desserts, I remembered how in elementary school when were were learning about fractions we made fruit pizzas. 1/8th of the pie was kiwi, 1/8th strawberry, 1/8th blackberry, and so on and so on. With the 4th of July coming up in a few days, I used this opportunity to use some festive fruits that I had on hand to bake a tasty treat worth dealing with fractions for.

{Ingredients: Sugar Cookie dough, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Cream Cheese... That's it!}

{Pre-heat at 350 degrees}

{Cream Cheese on top after done baking for about 8 minutes}

{Cover in fresh berries}

{A finished slice}
